Probably you haven't heard much about the Olmec Empire (1500-400 BC), one of the six "pristine cultures" of the world thought to exist. There's so much to know about this culture, but one thing you won't forget is that they were the ones discovering cocoa beans from fermented, sun dried cacao pods. Used as currency and ceremonial drink, it was worth more than gold to them. "Xocolatl" was its name and 3000 years after its discovery by the Olmecs, cocoa was transformed into the Chocolate we know nowadays.
Cacao, or Theobroma Cacao, grows in the tropical rain forest regions in Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, but especially in Tabasco, Mexico.
