Barro Canelo, the Mexican Terracotta
Barro Canelo is a traditional clay/terracotta technique used in México since prehispanic times, and like some other pre-columbian techniques, It remains as part of a Mexican identity. El Rosario Community located in the municipality of Tonalá is the place where it’s made. Hundreds of families work hard to preserve this ancestral tradition that has been in their culture for more than 2 THOUSAND years in this part of Jalisco, and actually looking forward for the registered designation of origin. Because of this, exposure is a tribute and recognition to the artisans that still make these beautiful pieces. It’s called Barro Canelo, which means something like ‘cinnamon clay’, resembling the brow color of the cinnamon, and it is particularly special that the pigments used for decoration are 100% natural and made with the same soil/earth.
